Headaches that start in the neck

1. What it feels like
It usually starts at the back of the head and creeps forward, often on one side. Turning the head or holding it in one position for a long time makes it worse. The neck itself feels stiff.
2. Why it happens
The joints and muscles at the top of the neck share nerve pathways with the head. When those joints are stiff or irritated, the brain can read it as head pain. Long hours looking down at a phone or laptop are the usual trigger.
3. What helps
Restoring movement to those upper neck joints, easing the muscles around them, and changing the habits that stirred them up. Most people notice a difference within a few visits.
4. Things to try at home
Raise your screen. Take breaks. Gently turn your head to each side a few times an hour. A warm compress at the base of the skull in the evening can ease the tightness.
5. When it is something else
A sudden, severe headache unlike any you have had, a headache with a stiff neck and fever, or one that comes with confusion, slurred speech or weakness needs urgent medical care. Do not wait for an appointment with us.
