Chiropractic care during pregnancy

As the body changes, the lower back and pelvis carry more load in a different way. Here is how we adapt treatment, and what to expect.
The Kinnear Chiropractic team talking at the reception desk

1. Why the back and pelvis ache

Weight moves forward, the ligaments around the pelvis loosen, and the muscles of the lower back work harder to keep you upright. Pain in the lower back, the buttocks or the front of the pelvis is common from the second trimester onwards.

2. How treatment changes

We use low-force techniques and a table that adapts to a growing bump, so you are never lying flat on your front. Visits are gentle and unhurried. Nothing is done that you are not comfortable with.

3. What people notice

Most report easier walking, better sleep and less pain getting in and out of the car. Some come regularly through the pregnancy; others come only when something flares up.

4. At home

Sleep on your side with a pillow between the knees. Avoid standing on one leg to dress. Sit down to put on shoes. Short walks are better than long ones.

5. Tell your midwife

We are happy to work alongside your midwife or obstetrician and will write to them if you want us to. If you have any complications in the pregnancy, check with them before booking.
